Privacy Notice: Severe Weather Scheme bird condition form
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is providing you with this information so you know how we collect personal data (information) about you, what we do with it and why. This document – our Severe Weather Scheme bird condition form privacy notice – will tell you about our processing and about the rights you have in relation to how we use your data. Who are we?
JNCC is responsible for looking after the personal data we collect as part of the work we carry out to gather information on waterfowl condition during the shooting season 7 November to 20 February.
We are known as the ‘data controller’. At the bottom of this privacy notice you will find our contact details and links to additional privacy notices.
Why do we collect and use information about you?
JNCC collects personal details when individuals provide information on waterfowl condition during severe weather, so that follow-up contact for additional details can be made.
Our lawful basis for the processing
We do this to enact our statutory duty to co-ordinate the Severe Weather Scheme in line with the requirements of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

JNCC will we collect and use:
- Name
- Email address
- Organisation/employer
- Phone number
How do we collect information about you?
We collect this personal information about you when you complete the form to provide information on waterbird condition in periods of severe weather, if you choose to provide your name, organisation and contact details.
Who your information will be shared with and why?
JNCC will share contact information from members of the public who choose to give their contact details when providing information on waterbird condition in periods of severe weather. This will be shared with Natural England, NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales so they can follow up regarding the information provided.
How long do we keep your data?
Contact details collected via the bird condition form will be retained until the end of the severe weather season (20 February).
Do we transfer your personal information to any third countries or international organisations?
JNCC does not transfer your personal information outside the UK. All personal information is kept on secure servers located in the UK.
Do we use automated decision making processes, including profiling?
JNCC does not use automated decision making or profiling with your personal data.
Your rights
You have legal rights about the way JNCC manages and uses your personal data. You can:
- Ask for a copy of your data, free of charge.
- Ask us to change any data held about you that is incorrect or incomplete.
- Ask us to stop using your personal data until it is rectified.
- Ask for the use of your data to be restricted.
- Ask us to erase your data (known as the ‘right to be forgotten).
- Tell us that you have changed your mind if you have previously given consent for your information to be used for a particular purpose.
- Ask us for a portable electronic copy of your data (data portability).
Not all of these rights are absolute, which means they may only apply in certain circumstances. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has more information on your rights and you can also contact our Data Protection Manager for help.
Where we have used consent as our lawful basis you have the right to withdraw that consent and can do so by contacting our Data Protection Manager in the first instance.
