Identifying potential site options for Tranche Three of MCZs in Secretary of State Waters 2016

Abstract

As a result of the outcomes of the 2016 network analysis, JNCC and Natural England were asked by Defra to develop an approach to identifying potential new site options to complete Defra’s contribution to the MPA network. This approach is set out in the paper ‘Identifying potential site options to help complete the Marine Protected Area network in the waters around England’. There is also a supporting paper which assesses the contribution of other area-based measures to address shortfalls in the MPA network in Secretary of State waters.

  1. Identifying potential site options to help complete the Marine Protected Area network in the waters around England
  2. Assessing the contribution of other area-based measures to addressing shortfalls in the MPA network in Secretary of State waters

For Tranche 3 some additional guidance was produced around the consideration of sites proposed for highly mobile species. Document 3 – 'Identifying possible Marine Conservation Zones for highly mobile species: Principles for third-party proposals' provides the principles for identifying MCZs for highly mobile species.
