Geoconservation in the Overseas Territories of the UK 2009

Abstract

This report was commissioned by JNCC to help improve understanding of the geological importance and diversity of the UK's Overseas Territories. A further aim was to broadly review the geoconservation activity being carried out there, and identify any particularly significant threats to important geological features.

The study provides a simple summary of the geodiversity features that are of special conservation value. For each territory, a list of geoconservation sites (where they exist) including national and international designations, geoparks, World Heritage sites, and other protected sites that encompass geology and landscape is provided. There is also a summary of the major threats and ‘environmental pressures’ potentially affecting the sites and areas; information on existing, or potential opportunities for, geotourism; and relevant weblinks to additional sources of information.
