GCR block descriptions: Palaeontology 1997

Abstract

Provided here are the Palaeontology GCR block descriptions, produced as part of the Geological Conservation Review. These ‘blocks’ provided an overall structure for site selection by ensuring that the different themes of geoheritage or Earth science would receive comparable treatment.

The Palaeontology blocks address the evolution and diversity of significant animal and plant groups not included in the stratigraphy blocks and therefore have independent block status. Geological time is used as the basis to define some blocks.

The Palaeontology GCR block descriptions provided here include the following:

  • Block 3: Arthropoda (APD);
  • Block 7: Aves (AVES);
  • Block 10: Carboniferous - Permian Fish/Amphibia (C-P-FA);
  • Block 38: Jurassic - Cretaceous Reptilia (JUR-CRE-RP);
  • Block 58: Mesozoic - Tertiary Fish/Amphibia (MZ-TR-FI-A);
  • Block 48: Mesozoic Mammalia (MES-MAM);
  • Block 49: Mesozoic Palaeobotany (MES-PALBOT);
  • Block 66: Palaeoentomology (PALENT);
  • Block 67: Palaeozoic Palaeobotany (PAZ-PALBOT);
  • Block 71: Permian - Triassic Reptilia (PER-TRI-RP);
  • Block 68: Pleistocene Vertebrata (PCN-VTB);
  • Block 93: Silurian - Devonian Chordata (SIL-DEV-CH);
  • Block 95: Tertiary Mammalia (TER-MAM);
  • Block 96: Tertiary Palaeobotany (TER-PALBOT)
  • Block 97: Tertiary Reptilia (TER-REP)

GCR block descriptions are based largely on existing GCR publications, where available. More detailed information about the topics covered in each block can be found in the relevant GCR volume.
