Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland excluding offshore areas 2019
The spatial dataset of Special Areas of Conservation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland (excluding offshore areas beyond 12 nautical miles) submitted to Europe as part of the tranche 58 Natura 2000 submission in March 2019.
Sites are submitted in batches called Tranches. Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are strictly protected sites designated under the EC Habitats Directive. Article 3 of the Habitats Directive requires the establishment of a European network of important high-quality conservation sites that will make a significant contribution to conserving the 189 habitat types and 788 species identified in Annexes I and II of the Directive (as amended). The listed habitat types and species are those considered to be most in need of conservation at a European level (excluding birds). Of the Annex I habitat types, 78 are believed to occur in the UK. Of the Annex II species, 43 are native to, and normally resident in, the UK.

The GIS boundary data have been collated at JNCC from data supplied by the following organisations: -Scottish Natural Heritage www.snh.gov.uk -Natural Resources Wales www.ccw.gov.uk -Natural England www.naturalengland.org.uk -Department of Environment, Northern Ireland. Whenever there is a change to the submitted information (e.g. the addition of a new candidate SAC or an extension to an SPA), the UK Government is required to update the GIS digitised boundary information. The area estimates (i.e. hectarages) shown on the official site documentation (e.g. Natura2000 standard data forms) have been derived from these digitised datasets, and should therefore also match up. In the case of Natura2000 sites the version available from this website is an exact copy of the dataset sent to the EU. The Official dataset will only be updated on the JNCC website following new submissions of SACs, SPAs or Ramsar sites to the international authority (the EU or Ramsar Secretariat). JNCC will re-publish the dataset in its entirety within ten working days of the official submission.
