Achieving Fair and Effective Marine Protected and Conserved Areas in Belize Through the IUCN Green List Standard: PHASE 1 2024

Abstract

The project, "Achieving Fair and Effective Marine Protected and Conserved Areas in Belize through the IUCN Green List Standard," conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation (previously Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation) and Belize Fisheries Department, emphasises the strategic incorporation of Belize's MPAs into the Green List pathway by 2027.

Phase 1 aimed to introduce the Green List process to colleagues in Belize through an in-person workshop, and to begin the process towards achieving Green List status by conducting rapid assessments using the IUCN Green List Standard to benchmark current status and assess performance of MPAs in Belize, and providing a guide for the implementation of the IUCN Green List Standard across Belize’s MPA network.

As part of Phase 1, the following resources have been produced:

  • Proposed roadmap for engaging Belize Marine Protected Areas in the IUCN Green List Standard and independent verification process.
  • Report on the effectiveness of 14 marine protected areas in Belize, using the IUCN Green List Standard to benchmark current status and assess performance: Compiled Green List Self-Assessments with IUCN Review and Recommendations
