Fair Isle seabird studies 1998 1999

Abstract

This report presents the results of seabird monitoring on Fair Isle in 1998. Some of the data collected in previous years have been re-analysed and therefore some of the results for the years 1986-97 published in this report may differ slightly from those in previous reports.

Breeding success was average or slightly below average for most species in 1998. However, Arctic terns, Arctic skuas and kittiwakes had their worst year since 1990.

Few food samples were obtained from most species, with the exception of puffins. Sandeels were the principal food items for shags, kittiwakes, guillemots and razorbills in 1998. Gadoids were the principal food items for puffins, indicating that a shortage of sandeels occurred during the breeding season.
