JNCC MPA Network Assessments in Secretary of State (SoS) Waters 2016

Abstract

These documents detail the network assessments undertaken to assess the progress towards meeting policy commitments towards an ecologically coherent network of MPAs in SoS waters to inform further MPA designations.

  1. Assessing progress towards an ecologically coherent network of MPAs in Secretary of State Waters 2014: Defra asked JNCC to review progress towards the MPA network in assuming a second tranche of MCZs were designated in 2015 to inform a decision on whether any further MPAs might be required beyond 2015 to meet national and international policy commitments. This report details the results of this assessment.

  2. Assessing progress towards an ecologically coherent MPA network in Secretary of State Waters in 2016: Methodology

  3. Assessing progress towards an ecologically coherent MPA network in Secretary of State Waters in 2016 – Results: Defra asked JNCC to assess the progress towards meeting policy commitments of the MPA network up to 2016. The results were to help inform Defra’s planning for any further MPA designations that may be necessary to complete the network. JNCC was asked to look at what is protected within the existing MPA network and then consider the potential contribution of other site options for a third tranche of MCZ designations. These reports form the methodology and results of this assessment.

  4. Identifying the remaining MCZ site options that would fill big gaps in the existing MPA network around England and offshore waters of Wales and Northern Ireland. Defra asked JNCC to identify which of the remaining recommended MCZs not designated in the first tranche of MCZs in November 2013, together with any additional features recently identified within existing MCZs, are important to filling any 'big gaps' in the MPA network. Defra intended to use such information alongside JNCC and Natural England assessments of the confidence in the presence and extent of features within sites and the socio-economic costs of sites to identify a second tranche of potential MCZs for public consultation in 2015.
