Analysis of harbour porpoise sightings data in relation to area-based conservation 2014

Abstract

The EC Habitats Directive requires member states to consider Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for all species listed in the Directive’s Annex II. The Annex includes bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). The aforementioned inhabit relatively discrete areas of coastal water in several parts of the European Union, but the latter are much more widely distributed, and there is little evidence of long-term ‘residence’ in any particular area.

The aim of this study was to apply statistical modelling techniques in order to identify areas of high porpoise density that might be suitable as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This report was compiled in 2002.
