Marine Nature Conservation Review: Sector 9. Inlets in the Bristol Channel and approaches: Area summaries 1998

Abstract

The Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) began in 1987. Its aim was to provide information describing the marine habitats, communities and species around Great Britain. This was collected in such a way as to underpin the development of management systems for marine nature conservation and to support the identification of marine protected areas.

This volume (MNCR Sector 9) covers a summary of information on the marine inlets of south-west Britain from the River Hayle in Cornwall northwards to Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire. The habitats and communities of the marine inlets of south-west Britain are considered to have many physiographic and ecological similarities and have been the subject of various surveys, primarily the Harbours, Rias and Estuaries (HRE) programme commissioned by the Nature Conservancy Council. The HRE surveys were carried out by the Field Studies Council Oil Pollution Research Unit (OPRU) between 1985 and 1989 and covered all of the major and most of the minor inlets between Portsmouth and Milford Haven. The HRE studies included field surveys of the shores and sublittoral zone of each inlet to describe their habitats and communities (together referred to as biotopes) and to assess their natural heritage importance. In this volume, the data from the HRE surveys, together with data from a variety of other sources, have been analysed to classify the marine biotopes present and to describe their distribution within each inlet. Information on the designated conservation sites and main human influences in each inlet was also compiled.

Please note that this resource has been produced from a scan of an original document. You may therefore experience fluctuations in quality and large file sizes.

Due to the file size of the volume, it is divided into the following parts:

  • Part 1: Prelims, Introduction & Area summaries 1 (River Hayle) to 8 (River Wye).
  • Part 2: Area summaries 9 (River Usk) to 14 (Milford Haven & the Cleddau) and Appendices A to C.
