UK Biodiversity Indicators 2022: Summary Booklet (December 2022) 2022

Abstract

Summary of the 2022 update of the UK Biodiversity Indicators, published on 14 December 2022.

In the 2022 publication, released on 14 December 2022, six indicators were updated. Please note that an additional indicator (C4a) was updated in May 2023, but the summary booklet has not been updated to reflect this. To access the latest information, visit the webpage for Indicator C4a

Indicators are useful tools for summarising and communicating broad trends. The UK biodiversity indicators have a specific purpose for international reporting and are dependent on a wide variety of data, provided by government, research bodies, and the voluntary sector. In total, nearly 100 organisations are involved in their production. The presentation and assessment of the indicators has been verified by the data providers, and the production and editing of the indicators has been overseen by government statisticians.

Additional information on the UK Biodiversity Indicators, including links to the documents associated with each indicator, are provided in the 2022 online update.

Lineage
The UK Biodiversity Indicators were first published in 2007. They were created to provide a measure for reporting on the UK’s progress towards meeting international biodiversity goals and targets. The indicators were comprehensively reviewed during 2011 and 2012 to ensure they continued to be based on the most robust and reliable available data, and remained relevant to the international goals and targets developed in 2010 and 2011.
