South Atlantic Natural Capital Assessment: St Helena Cost Benefit Analysis – Water Security (Report & Calculation Sheet) 2019

Abstract

This study was commissioned by the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) to assess water security options for St Helena. Provided are the technical report and cost benefit calculation worksheet for the study. The report and calculation sheet contain cost-benefit analysis for different water security options on St Helena. These included: limited new reservoir storage, a reservoir development at Fisher's Valley, desalination, and a mix of new storage and mist collection through cloud forest restoration, using discount rates of 4%, 7% and 10%.

This study was undertaken as part of a programme of Natural Capital Assessment (NCA) in the UK's South Atlantic Overseas Territories implemented by JNCC and conducted by SAERI. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the UK Government through the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF), the work sits under the Environmental Resilience programme which includes objectives to integrate natural capital considerations into economic and social development planning.
