Impacts of COVID-19 in the Turks and Caicos Islands 2024

Abstract

Available here are two reports produced as part of the RESEMBID-supported Resilient Community Recovery from Covid-19 in the Turks and Caicos Islands project, delivered in partnership between JNCC, the Turks and Caicos Islands Government Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), the Turks and Caicos Islands Fishing Cooperative, the Turks and Caicos National Trust, and Invest Turks and Caicos. These reports summarise the environmental impacts of Covid-19 in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and include the following:

  • Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts of COVID-19 in the Turks and Caicos Islands: Technical Report: This report examines the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The research provides insights into the challenges faced by various societal groups and economic sectors, as well as opportunities for long-term, sustainable recovery. Key findings are derived from an online socio-economic and environmental survey, supplemented by key informant interviews with stakeholders in government, community groups, and industry. The report highlights the differential impacts of COVID-19 across demographics, sectors, and geographic regions in TCI.
  • Business Community Impacts of COVID-19 in the Turks and Caicos Islands: Technical Report: This report explores the impact of COVID-19 on the business community in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The report captures how businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality, experienced short-term revenue losses and long-term recovery challenges. Findings highlight sectoral variations in recovery, with tourism benefiting from increased visitor numbers post-pandemic, though this also heightened environmental pressures. The study examines the relationship between business operations and the natural environment, revealing limited understanding among businesses about their environmental impacts compared to their dependencies on ecosystem services.

This project is funded by the Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity Programme (RESEMBID), a €40M programme financed by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France, the development cooperation agency of France.
