OWSMRF Continuation Concept Notes and Scope of Work 2023

Abstract

The Offshore Wind Strategic Monitoring and Research Forum (OWSMRF) is an industry-led collaborative forum that aims to better understand the impact of large-scale offshore wind development on marine birds.

Following a successful Pilot Year (2019–2020), the OWSMRF Continuation ran between April 2021 and February 2023. Building on the Pilot, as well as benefitting from the invaluable input from a wide range of stakeholders, including the UK's statutory nature conservation bodies, experts and researchers in the field, the OWSMRF Continuation identified further high-priority species and knowledge gaps, and research ideas to close those gaps.

A summary of the 18 OWSMRF Continuation Research Opportunities (ROs), which focus on Procellariiformes, specifically Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) and European storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), can be found in the OWSMRF Continuation Concept Notes.

Of the Research Opportunities (ROs) identified by OWSMRF, a Scope of Work (SoW) has been produced for RO 4.2 and RO 3a (Review, modelling and trials of annual monitoring for Manx shearwaters and European storm-petrels), detailing the work required to address the evidence gap.
