Monitoring provides insight into the state of the natural environment, which can tell us how it is changing and why. This information can be used to direct policies and management interventions, as well as to assess their effectiveness.
For over 25 years, JNCC has funded long-term schemes to monitor biodiversity across the UK. We work in partnership with a wide range of organisations to develop and run schemes to monitor a variety of species, and habitats. Our experts have a track record of using the best-available, cost-effective science, techniques and technologies, to collect, analyse, disseminate and interpret data. We work in both the marine and terrestrial environments, at a broad range of scales.
As well as continuing to develop new approaches to assess change within the UK, we use our expertise elsewhere including the UK Overseas Territories. Wherever we operate, we use the evidence we gather to increase awareness of the value of the natural environment and the services it provides in supporting economic growth and underpinning people’s well-being.

Making best use of Earth observation data: We have considerable expertise in the field of Earth observation (EO) and use this expertise to provide high-quality evidence on biodiversity and ecosystems.
Monitoring and mapping the marine offshore environment: We monitor and map the marine offshore environment to provide evidence to enhance our knowledge of the seas around the UK.
Analyses and trends: We make use of monitoring data to evaluate species' and habitat status, and to evaluate the impacts of pressures.
